What is Health Coaching?Health coaching is a partnership between a coach and their client and requires a commitment to open communication. Health coach empowers clients with the tools and processes to build self-efficacy around their health and well-being. Health coaches are non-judgmental accountability partners. They help clients create long- and short-term goals based on the changes they want to make in life. Health coaches provide helpful resources; and they don’t direct clients, but they do offer resources, such as tips and recipes, to help them reach their goals.
-
Why Did I Become a Health Coach?I became a certified health coach in 2017 after learning that my mother’s heart attack was preventable through lifestyle changes. After receiving my coaching certification, I pursued a MPH in Nutrition that offered more knowledge in evidence-based solutions and behavior change planning.
-
What are your qualifications and certifications to be a health coach? In addition to a Masters in Public Health in Nutrition, I hold nationally-recognized certifications in health coaching, fitness training and nutrition coaching.
-
What is My Coaching Philosophy?Key tenets in my coaching approach including: partnership between the client and coach; knowledge that everyone is an individual on their own journey; listening, empathy and compassion. I believe my job is to walk alongside my clients and create a safe, creative, and thought-provoking environment that promotes accountability and growth, all while encouraging their own self-directed goals.
-
How Do Health Coaching Sessions Work?Coaching sessions differ greatly, depending on the coaches’ and clients’ schedules, what the clients’ goals are, and a number of other factors. Typical session lengths include 45 to 60 minutes, weekly or biweekly, to help provide a safe space for each person to discuss their wellness path. Whether your session is in-person or on the telephone, each session begins with a quick agenda to respect each other’s time constraints. Generally, the first order of business is to follow up from the last appointment, to see where the client has done well and identify areas where they can continue to improve. Then, it’s on to discuss where the client wants to go next.
-
How Long Does it Take to See Changes in Weight, Stress Levels, Mindset, etc?Everyone is different, and change will vary for each person. A motivated individual can notice minor changes within the first two to three weeks, when working with a Health Coach. More substantial changes can take anywhere from three to six months.
-
How is health coaching different from seeing a therapist?Mental health professionals diagnose and treat mental health conditions, including helping people work through trauma, relationship conflict, and other issues. Working with a therapist can help with unresolved mental health concerns, such as mood disorders, anxiety and other similar conditions. Health coaches are not mental health professionals, and their work is not focused on treating mental health conditions. Health coaches can provide support to alleviate some of the symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression through behavior and lifestyle changes but will refer clients to mental health professionals if needed.
-
What is your approach to fitness training? My fitness training philosophy is to focus on the whole person - body, mind, and spirit. I believe that physical activity is an important part of overall health, and that it should be tailored to the individual in order to be effective. I strive to educate my clients on the importance of proper nutrition, rest, and stress management in order to achieve their goals. I also believe in creating a positive and supportive environment where clients can reach their goals in a safe and enjoyable way. The goal of my fitness training program is to help clients achieve their long-term health and fitness goals.
-
How do you know what fitness areas to focus on for clients? My training approach begins with a standard fitness assessment in order to determine the client's current fitness level and any potential areas of improvement. Based on the assessment, I develop a personalized training plan that is tailored to the client's individual needs and goals. I use a combination of strength training, cardio, and core exercises to help build muscle, increase endurance, and improve overall fitness. I also provide nutritional advice and guidance in order to help the client reach their goals in a safe and effective manner.
-
What type of training to do offer? My fitness training approach for you will include a combination of cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and flexibility drills. We'll start off with a few basic exercises to get you accustomed to the program and increase the intensity as we progress. We'll also focus on nutrition and ensure that you are eating the right foods to fuel your body. Additionally, we'll work together to come up with a plan to help you stay motivated and on track with your goals. Finally, we'll make sure to monitor your progress, and make any necessary adjustments to your program to ensure that you are getting the most out of your training.
-
Do I have to go to a gym to work out?Going to the gym is not necessary to train, as there are plenty of exercises that can be done at home. Bodyweight exercises such as squats, push-ups, and lunges can all be done without a gym, as can cardio activities such as running, cycling, or swimming. Additionally, you can purchase free weights or resistance bands to use at home for strength training. Ultimately, the choice of where to train is up to you and what kind of equipment you have access to.
-
What is your approach to nutrition and weight management? My nutrition coaching strategy is focused on helping clients develop a more sustainable approach to healthy eating. I believe in using evidence-based nutrition principles to create an individualized nutrition plan tailored to the client's lifestyle and goals. My approach includes working with clients to develop an understanding of their current eating habits, learning about their food preferences, and ultimately helping them to create a plan that works for them and their lifestyle. I also take a holistic approach to nutrition coaching, emphasizing the importance of physical activity, stress management, and sleep in addition to nutrition in order to create a healthy lifestyle.
-
How to you work with clients that want to lose weight? My coaching practice revolves around the idea of healthy eating. I focus on providing clients with knowledge about the best food choices for their individual needs, balancing their diets, and helping them to develop healthy habits. I believe that it is essential to not only lose weight, but to also maintain a healthy lifestyle. My main goal is to help my clients achieve optimal energy and cognitive focus through healthy eating that will help them achieve their optimal body weight.
-
Will I be able to get individualized meal plans? While I understand the importance of providing individualized meal plans, I provide general advice and guidance on healthy eating habits and nutrition. Additionally, I will be available for consultation to ensure that any dietary needs and appetites are taken into account when navigating dietary changes. I will also be able to provide educational information on various meal plans and diets that may be beneficial.
-
Do you prescribe diet programs or sell supplements?I do not offer supplements or commercial diet programming, nor do I have any plans to in the near future. I believe that the best way to maintain a healthy lifestyle is to focus on eating wholesome, natural foods and leading an active lifestyle. I provide guidance on how to do this, but do not offer supplements or commercial diet programming as part of my services.
